History of Wine

Wine is an alcoholic beverage that is made from grapes. Several tales are surrounding the history of wine. For instance, the biblical accounts record that wine originated from Noah and his sons producing wine at Mount Ararat. However, according to archaeologists, the history of wine can be dated back to thousands of years ago.

It is also intertwined with the history of agriculture and civilization. According to archaeological evidence, the earliest wine was first fermented in around 5000BC in regions of Armenia, Georgia, and Iran.

This made medieval Europe come up and replace Rome in the industrial production and export of grape wine. In the same period, the Christians within Europe and its environs much supported the production of wine as it was used for the celebration of the Catholic mass.

In as much as the Islamic society prohibited wine, its consumption still became popular in the 15th century. By the early 1850s, the production of wine eventually became distributed throughout the world. French wine production took off during the 18th century. The 19th century was considered a golden age wine in many regions around the globe.

Grape wine, however, was brought first in Latin America by the Spanish colonies. It was primarily meant to necessitate the holy communion practice by the Catholic Eucharist. To date, the earliest planted grapes known as mission grapes, are still grown in small amounts in America.

The oldest winery is currently located in the Vayots Dzor in Armenia. This precious location was announced by archaeologist early in 2011. Among the things found by archaeologist includes wine press, fermentation pots, jars, and cups. Also, this, grape seeds and vines were found.

Over the last two centuries, wine production has wholly been revolutionized due to the improvement of technology and scientific discoveries. With the access of refrigeration, wine manufacturers can now control the fermentation temperatures among other processes so as to produce quality wines. Also, the introduction of harvesters and agricultural techniques have made manufacturers to increase their volume of production.
